Personal Development is a Prelude to Professional Development

Personal Development is a Prelude to Professional Development
When my feet hit the floor in the morning, it’s a personal victory. One that was inspired by hard work and commitment. I preach balance everywhere. It’s no more or less important at any age. Body, mind, heart, and spirit create the whole child then later the whole person.
As educators and parents, we need to set the tone, model the behavior, and give viable options to create relationships. These connections will foster lifelong habits and a growth mindset that encourages our students and children to take calculated creative risks.
Social media has allowed us to track the adventures of our former students. The other day, I received the gift of a message on one of the social media outlets. This communication reinforced the culture we created in our school twenty years ago.
Our climate and culture allowed everyone opportunity for leadership. As our leadership opportunities advanced, the “whole person” was a priority. The students’ personal development became their professional development. Students and educators alike became facilitators as well as participants. This acculturation was not an anomaly but a way of teaching, learning, and leading. Throw that follower model out of the window and create more leadership experiences that include service and character. It works!
