Perception Is Still Reality

During my career as an educator, I was amazed at how many things people said I did that I knew nothing about.  People talk about other people.  It’s human nature.  But it’s another example of bad human nature. How would you feel if you found out that you were the topic of the work lounge, and you were talked about in a negative way and then you found out it was a misunderstanding or totally wrong?  Perception is reality.
We experience the same things as parents. How would you feel if you found out you were the topic of the ballpark? Why would you believe gossip you cannot confirm or knew nothing about? Don’t get involved. And even if you do know something, don’t get involved.  Spend your time talking about the positives. Try it. It comes back to you in a positive way.
Periodically, I invite parents in to hear the same lesson I teach their children. Sometimes a lot of parents show up and sometimes they do not but they take away legitimate communication for and about their children. Other times I offer out the same information to colleges and universities. Here is an example of communication on the same wave length at my daughter’s university:

“Thank you so much for a very informative and inspiring talk last evening. The students and I truly appreciate the time, the wonderful leadership guidelines, and your willingness to share your teaching and life experiences with us. You are one of our most valued guest speakers, and we appreciate your professional contribution and teaching wisdom in assisting us with our teacher preparation goals. Again, thank you!”

Stay Fired Up!
