This semester, I’m
teaching an undergraduate course in leadership at a local university. I
reflected for a long time about the material we would use and how to approach
leadership theory and experiences with a group of undergrad students that had
little or no training in leadership. I reflected on my journey and the paths of
the students in this class. I have been blessed to have accumulated many
stories of failure, success, research, and leadership to share.
My life has been filled
with many types of literature and relationships with a plethora of diverse
people that contributed to my life experiences. I find new paradigms in the
lessons with these young adults each class. These students have responded in a
positive light.
I figured it out a long
time ago. When people know you believe in them, they respond. Don’t get me
wrong, I can spot the students that take the short cuts, and there are people
that do take them. I really believe they are getting the concept that you
cannot separate your character and leadership. They are making their life
connections to what is important. Positive influence is emerging.
These students also want
to be a part of something, and we are creating opportunities through awareness and
a new skill set some are not used to having. We are using two of my favorite
leadership books, The Servant by James Hunter, and the 8th
Habit by Stephen Covey. We have started planning our group service projects
this week. I am expecting some significant change agents and so are the
students.
The first reaction papers
were completed. I was impressed that most students were able to connect their
lives to the material and the many stories I use in class. Everyone should feel
important and everyone should anticipate a great day. If they don’t, we need to
act. Get Fired Up!!
P.S. the second edition
of 50 Great Things Leaders Do: Let’s Get Fired Up! Is coming out soon.
Thank you for your patience!
