Share Your Stories

It’s funny how your luck changes in a positive direction when you are committed to hard work. Teaching was not my career choice out of the University of San Francisco. Believe it or not, I was a magician and magic store owner until I found my path as an educator. I was even chained up, handcuffed, nailed in a box, and thrown in a river (on purpose) as part of a magical, escape act.
Share your stories. Listen to others’ stories. When people know you are listening, they connect. Other than my dissertation, most of what I write tells the many stories of the people I’ve met during my life. I was able to connect with these people because I listened and I cared about their stories because they are important.
People can never take away your stories. That’s why I tell them, and I hope people tell me their stories in reciprocation. Everyone you meet should feel important. They may not get that inspiration but they should. Be prepared, though, that no matter what you do, some people will find a flaw. That’s ok. Live your life through positive character and influence anyway. Life is for living.
A magical escape act:

When I speak to larger audiences, I often tell them that 2% of people won’t get what you are trying to do to improve climate and culture through servant leadership. They get caught up in the “me” vs. “we.” That’s OK because you created 98% of your organization as movers and shakers
